Google Goggles

I was watching CNBC last week when I caught a show titled, Inside the Mind of Google. I happened to tune in during a segment about a new Google technology named “Google Goggles” which allows users to take a picture and search the web for more information / content based on the visual image. Check it out…

I thought this was amazing and could be very useful for me! I love to travel and such a tool would be a great asset. However, when I shared this with a colleague, they looked at me with a very serious expression and asked, “How long before facial recognition as the basis for the search? It won’t be long before I can walk down the street, take a picture of of a complete stranger and pull up their online profile.”

I understand their concern and also recognize that every technology / tool can be used for purposes other than what it was intended. Just because something could be used for less than noble purposes doesn’t mean that it should not be pursued. I think that Google is on to something here and we will see it mainstream sooner than later. Guess I better update my photos on Twitter and Facebook…
